OUR STORY

'I believe that a person's needs go back to two much deeper needs. They are a person's need for God and a person's need for salvation from the power of evil in their own soul. Is it the faith which is the only answer to those needs- the faith revealed in the New Testament, summed up in the Creeds and shown forth all down the ages and all over the world in the worship of the church. For it is in the worship of the church that we meet together to acknowledge our need and to confess our faith: and that is by far the most important thing we do in the whole week'.

Frank Lewis, Vicar of Christ Church, 1955

Christ Church Sutton has been here for over a hundred years. As the railway came in, and the suburb grew, so did our church; a beautiful, spacious building, dedicated in 1887 'to the Glory of God and in the Faith of the Holy Trinity'.

Since then, the church has been a faithful presence in the community, following Christ and leading others to him. The area has changed, and so has the church. Christ Church Park, the road our building is on, used to have several large houses, rather than the blocks of flats that are currently there. Apparently you were considered 'lower middle class' if you 'only' had two household servants! Only a few decades ago, the electoral roll was over a thousand people, and weekly attendance would be several hundred.

In the mid-2000's, Christ Church was placed into a Team Ministry, alongside St Nicholas, Sutton, and St Barnabas, Sutton New Town. This brought with it a new structure- ministers divided their time between churches, and much life was held in common.

In 2018, it was agreed by all three churches that this arrangement was not working- and so Christ Church is now functioning as a single Parish church, under the ministry of our current Vicar, Revd. Phil Brooks, who has been with us since 2016. We continue to have good, collaborative relationships with St Nicholas and St Barnabas.

In the last few years, there has been a renewed emphasis on pastoral care and biblical preaching. We have begun to see growth again in the church, and are beginning to explore together what it means to be 'all together in ministry'- see attached pastoral letter here for more details on that.

Whether you are a committed Christian looking to grow and serve, exploring the Christian faith, or 'just' looking, there is a space for you here at Christ Church.
